Buses on the G Corridor Average 7 to 8 mph on Weekends

Monthly weekend speeds on the four bus routes that run parallel to the G between Greenpoint and Downtown Brooklyn, January 2023 to June 2026. The B62, which follows the shuttle route down Manhattan Avenue, has not averaged above 8.0 mph in any month; the B43 has not topped 7.4. None of the four is faster in 2026 than it was in 2023.

The shuttle inherits the corridor's speed. The G covers Court Sq to Bedford-Nostrand in 15.5 scheduled minutes. At the B62's weekend speed of 7.2 mph (Saturday, 2026), the same 4.8 road miles take 40 minutes before any wait at the stop, which is what Streetsblog measured on the 2024 shuttles: 40 to 51 minutes. Nothing on the corridor has sped up during the shutdown years. DOT installed temporary bus lanes on DeKalb and Lafayette for the 2024 full shutdown and has added none since; the B62 averaged 7.55 mph on weekends in 2023 and 7.61 mph in the first half of 2026.

Method. The MTA reports average speed and total mileage per route, month, day type and period. Weekend rows (day type 2) for peak and off-peak were combined by weighting each period's speed by its mileage. Route-level speed includes time at stops and traffic signals, so it is lower than moving speed but is the number that determines a trip time.

Routes. B62 (Long Island City to Downtown Brooklyn via Manhattan Av and Bedford Av; the MTA's G shuttle follows this corridor), B43 (Greenpoint to Kensington via Graham Av and Tompkins Av), B48 (Greenpoint to Lefferts Gardens via Lorimer St, Franklin Av and Classon Av), B32 (Long Island City to Williamsburg via Kent Av). All four overlap the G's catchment for most of their length.
