The G Has Been Shut on 15 of the First 34 Weekends of 2026

Every weekend since January 2023 at the ten stations only the G serves, read from the MTA's hourly turnstile data. A station whose Saturday entries fall from 7,000 to 25 was closed, and that pattern repeated on 5 weekends in 2023, 12 in 2024, 10 in 2025, and 15 of the first 34 weekends of 2026, with two more September closures announced and three December weekends proposed. Since the summer 2024 shutdown began, riders have lost 35 of 113 weekends on at least one segment.

2026 is the worst year yet, and the remaining schedule makes it worse. Fifteen of the first 34 weekends had a segment shut (44%), against 10 weekends in all of 2025 and 5 in 2023, before the signal project began. Add the two September closures the MTA has announced (Sep 11 to 14 and Sep 25 to 28) and the three December weekends it has proposed and 2026 ends with 20 of 52 weekends lost, 38% of the year.

The north end takes most of it. Of the 35 closure weekends since the summer 2024 shutdown began, 26 shut some or all of the Court Sq to Bedford-Nostrand segment, which cuts Greenpoint and Williamsburg off from the rest of the line. March 2026 alone had five consecutive north-segment weekends.

Method. The MTA publishes hourly entries for every station complex. For each of the ten stations served only by the G (21 St, Greenpoint Av, Nassau Av, Broadway, Flushing Av, Myrtle-Willoughby Avs, Bedford-Nostrand Avs, Classon Av, Clinton-Washington Avs, Fulton St), daily entries were compared with that station's median for the same day of the week in the same year. A station is counted as closed on a day when its entries fall below 15% of that median; on closure days the count is typically 1 to 40 entries against a median in the thousands. A weekend is counted as a closure when at least two stations were closed on Saturday or Sunday. Holiday weekends dip to 50–65% of median and are not counted.

Segments. "Court Sq to Bedford-Nostrand" means all six north-end stations were dark; "Court Sq to Nassau Av" means only 21 St and Greenpoint Av were, with Nassau Av as the temporary terminal; "Bedford-Nostrand to Hoyt-Schermerhorn" means Classon Av, Clinton-Washington Avs and Fulton St were dark while Bedford-Nostrand served as the terminal. Work between Bergen St and Church Av, where the G shares track and stations with the F, cannot be detected this way, so the count is a floor.

Announced and proposed closures. The MTA's G line service-changes page (updated Jul 23, 2026) lists full Court Sq to Bedford-Nostrand suspensions for the weekends of Sep 11–14 and Sep 25–28. The three December weekends are a proposal tied to the Newtown Creek tunnel repairs, reported by Streetsblog (Aug 21, 2026), and are not yet on the MTA page.
